With Sustainism is the New Modernism, Michiel Schwarz & Joost Elffers bring a new word into the world: "Sustainism." It captures the zeitgeist of our culture and names the next age. The visually-compelling "sustainist manifesto" gives voice to a worldwide movement that is already defining our future. Sustainism will become the mainstream culture of the 21st century. This book of graphic aphorisms, quotes and symbols is an inspiring quide for the emerging "Age of Sustainism."
Sustainism Is the New Modernism declares the dawn of a new cultural era. Humanity is moving from modernity to sustainity--towards a world that is more connected, more localist, more digital and, indeed, more sustainable. Yesterday's world was shaped by modernist values, from the design of our cities to our homes, technologies and our conceptions of progress. Sustainism recasts our relationship to all of these things. This innovative book reveals Sustainism as the new paradigm of our time--more interconnected and interdependent, global as well as local--changing how we live, do business, feed ourselves, design, communicate, and build our communities, as much as how we deal with nature. Schwarz & Elffers also introduce a series of sustainist symbols, designed for worldwide use by businesses, individuals and institutions. All is part of the new sustainist era. By naming it, this cultural manifesto makes it visible.
Michiel Schwarz is a Dutch cultural thinker, innovator and consultant, now working from Berkeley, California.
